Mobby is a mystery hobby box delivery service that provides fulfilling free time experience.
Mobby is a delivery service that provides personalised mystery hobby box for busy Chinese female students to discover and experience new hobbies so that they can find passion in life. The box will be themed in one of the selected hobbies with beginner tools and instructions to guide users to take the first step.
The challenge
Since industrial revolution, impressive boost can be seen in material wealth but not the same case with subjective well-being. The pursuit of happiness and having fun have been neglected since people are busy cultivating intellectual skills in the pursuit of wealth and status. At the same time, more than 264 million people of all ages suffer from depression due to pressure. Another big challenge is the rapid growth of passive activities such as digital media consumption and mobile phone addictions, people spend time consuming and soaking up videos constantly, instead of enriching their lives.
User research
Remote research was conducted to gain qualitative insights into target users' motivations, attitudes and behaviours when spending their free time.
Methods included: (1) A generative workshop requiring 7 participants to draw out the happiest scenario, write up love letter & break up letter relating to free time activities and evaluate the activities in 'motivation/purpose' grids, in order to obtain in-depth insights of their emotional experiences. (2) 7 Days of self-reported diary studies that asked users to note down how they actually spend the time and how do they feel. (3) Card sorting exercise to understand different rankings of ‘want to do’ & ‘enjoy’ &’ frequency” activities (4) 7 online interviews combined with previous research results, to look at differences between what they said and what did.
Key insights
Data was collated and analysed using affinity mapping. Key insights included:
a. Enjoyable activities can bring great sense of satisfaction and positive emotions to increase happiness.
b. They don’t have specific hobbies or loved things to insist on due to the lack of confidence and motivations.
c. They are leading an imbalanced lifestyle between study and free time with a compensation and guilty mindset.
A key inspiring quote was: "I always wanted my life can be different with more possibilities, but I never really make it happen."
Concept generation
HMW statements were generated again to reframe the user problems with solutions using the UX vision statement and user requirements as guidance. An evaluation matrix was used to select ‘HMW’s that fell in the ‘sweet spot’ between improving free time experience and addressing problematic behaviours. To expand the opportunities, the ‘behaviour change wheel’ was introduced to understand users’ behaviour from three dimensions: ‘capability’, ’motivation’ and ‘opportunity’ to identify what needs to be changed and intervened. Related strategies and trends were applied to generate a wide range of concept ideas.
Concept development
A co-design session with 3 users helped select the most desirable concept - hobby box and refine the idea further. Card sorting and the MoSCoW prioritisation method were used to finalise features and user requirements.
Design iteration
Experience prototype and remote user testing with 3 users were conducted to refine the service journey and iterate low fidelity prototype of the assistant app.
Final Concept
Users are able to customise mystery hobby box via the Mobby app by selecting hobbies that they want to explore and set suitable delivery mode. The Mobby box will be themed in one of the selected areas randomly with corresponding tools and instructions. The app also allows users to swap the unwanted boxes and communicate with like-minded friends to boost confidence.
Siting Ye
I am an ordinary person dedicated to improving people’s emotional experience and quality of life
I am interested in every stage of the double diamond model, from ‘discover' to 'deliver' . I am best at using a variety of methods to investigate the user's psychology and build empathy with their emotional and functional needs, in order to produce the most suitable design conception.
My major project aims to add value to peoples' lives and increase happiness by enhancing the free time experience. The mobby box is a personalised mystery hobby box that provide beginner tool sets and instructions for users to discover and experience new hobbies so that they reduce time spent on passive activities and have fun in the free time.
